What is the AMH Test?\nAn AMH test measures levels of anti-mullerian hormone, which gives information about the egg count. The AMH test helps diagnose an ovarian reserve. Although it’s connected to your egg count, it doesn’t predict fertility. An \nAMH test\n is a simple blood test. It is done mainly to check the reproductive health of a woman.\nWhat is Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH)?\nAMH plays a key role in developing a fetus's sex organs while in the uterus. AMH levels are higher in male fetuses, as this prevents them from developing female reproductive organs. Female fetuses only need a small amount of AMH for their development.\nIn females, cells inside the follicles of the ovaries produce AMH. Follicles are tiny fluid-filled sacs in the ovary that contain and release eggs.\nAMH levels correspond to the number of eggs you have or your ovarian reserve:\nHigher AMH levels mean more eggs and a higher ovarian reserve.\nLower AMH levels mean fewer eggs and a lower ovarian reserve.\nAMH is an important hormone, especially in women's reproductive organs, and is currently seen as the best biomarker for a multitude of uses in reproductive medicine. AMH has a high predictive value in assessing the ovarian reserve, which can lead to a better efficiency of in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures. \nWhen is an AMH test recommended?\nThe AMH test is recommended:\nto check the egg count/ovarian reserve\nto check if there are any \nfertility issues\n\nto check how the patient will respond if they are planning to go in for IVF treatment\nto check the response to ovarian stimulation medications\nto evaluate conditions like PCOS\nto track whether a woman is heading for early/premature menopause\nto check primary ovarian insufficiency (POI)\nThe AMH test cannot tell the reason for not being able to conceive, even if the level is within the stipulated range. There may be other factors that have to be seen, such as the age, sperm count & motility, blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, etc. \nWhat is the normal level of AMH?\nAMH levels vary depending on age. Generally, it is high during adolescence and is at its peak around the age of 25. After that, the levels naturally start declining. General ranges of AMH in nanograms per milliliter are:\nAverage - 1.0 ng/ml to 3.0 ng/ml\nLow - under 1.0 ng/ml\nSeverely low - 0.4 ng/ml\nLevels vary slightly between different labs.  It is normal to see a lower AMH level in the 30s/40s/50s. The estimated range at different ages is as follows:\n25 years old: 3.0 ng/mL.\n30 years old: 2.5 ng/mL.\n35 years old: 1.5 ng/ mL.\n40 years old: 1 ng/mL.\n45 years old: 0.5 ng/mL.\nHigh levels are not always good.  Some women with PCOS have high levels.  Home test kits are available to test AMH levels.  AMH levels are significantly associated with fertility. Hence, it is better to consult a fertility specialist because \nfertility\n is a complex issue and needs a comprehensive and expert evaluation.\nThe increasing female age has become a social and biological indication of infertility. A good solution to this problem would be an accurate ovarian reserve test available to reproductive medicine practitioners and their patients. This test could motivate a proportion of women to have their children earlier or reassure others that they still have time for conception. The levels of AMH in the serum of patients could lead to better clinical practice and optimization of infertility treatments.\n

Not necessarily. While a low AMH level indicates a lower egg count (ovarian reserve), it does not reflect the quality of the remaining eggs. Many women with low AMH conceive naturally.

Technically, you cannot "grow" new eggs, as women are born with a lifetime supply. Therefore, you cannot significantly increase your AMH level. 

Unlike other fertility hormones (such as FSH or Estrogen), AMH levels remain relatively stable throughout your menstrual cycle. This means the blood test can be performed at any time during your cycle, including while you are on birth control pills.

AMH is an excellent predictor of how your ovaries will respond to stimulation medication during an IVF cycle. While it predicts the quantity of eggs retrieved, it does not guarantee the success of the embryo implantation itself.
