Diet in InfertilityDr Maheshwari
A natural fertility diet is a way of eating that supports our body in its reproductive efforts. We all have heard our family physicians or dieticians advising about a balanced diet. A balanced diet should have appropriate proportions of complex carbohydrates (ragi, millets, wheat), leafy greens, whole grains, legumes, fresh fruits, vegetables, cereals with an adequate quantity of water (3 litres).
Let us see in brief what nutrients these food products have which are important from a fertility point of view.
> Spinach, Broccoli, Fenugreek, Green leafy vegetables – Rich in vitamin B and foliate
> Legumes and Beans – Rich in plant-based proteins
> Fish – Rich in omega 3 fatty acids.
> Fresh fruits and vegetables – Antioxidants, Minerals, Vitamins
> Dairy products – Calcium
> Cereals and grains – High in fibre and carbohydrates (That improves gut health and Balances blood sugar levels).
> Drinking an adequate quantity of water is also important. Dehydration can cause hormonal imbalances thereby affecting fertility.
Now let us see which foods to avoid to improve fertility.
> Try to avoid junk foods (pizzas, french fries, burgers), excessive coffee, tea, meat and processed foods, sweets, fried and oily food. Avoid smoking, tobacco products and alcohol.
> Try to avoid aerated drinks, bottled and canned juices as they may contain preservatives and chemicals.
> By practising an active lifestyle, maintaining optimum weight, and by eating a healthy diet we can achieve a healthy pregnancy.
