Know Your Birth Control Solutions!

Contraception is the best way for men and women to avoid unnecessary pregnancies. There is a wide range of contraceptive methods that can be relied upon when you want to be sexually active but don’t want to have a baby. You have the choice to choose which method is comfortable and right for you and your partner. However, it’s always advisable to consult your doctor before using any of the available options and it’s necessary to understand the method you choose to use.

Abstinence

Abstinence is the best birth control option that is undoubtedly effective to avoid unintended pregnancy and this is also an effective way to protect you against all STDs.

Female sterilization

In this method, the fallopian tubes are tied and this results in permanent sterility by preventing the transport of the egg to the uterus, to avoid further fertilization to take place.

Male sterilization

Vasectomy is a permanent sterilization procedure for men. This involves cutting and sealing the vas deferens (tubes that carry sperms) so that it prevents the passage of sperms out of the testes. It is still possible to achieve orgasm and it never affects the potency of men, but there will be no sperm in the ejaculate (sperm).

Intrauterine device (IUD)

The intrauterine device (IUD) is a flexible, T-shaped device placed into the women’s womb. IUDs are available in copper and plastic with minimal doses of progestin. This prevents the sperm from making its way through the vagina and uterus to reach the woman’s egg to avoid fertilization.

Emergency contraception (“morning-after pill”)

Emergency contraception is a birth control solution that may be used within 120 hours of having sex. It helps to avoid pregnancy in case of a broken condom, sexual assault, or other situations where contraception was not handy. There are two variants of such emergency contraceptive pills available, but only with a doctor’s prescription. The pills prevent pregnancy by blocking eggs from being produced temporarily. Emergency contraceptive pills are 90 per cent effective when taken within the first five days of having unprotected intercourse.

There are many types of contraceptive methods, and their effectiveness varies. Natural and barrier methods are less likely to cause negative effects than hormonal methods, but they may be less effective in terms of preventing pregnancies.

It’s always highly recommended to consult your doctors as they can provide professional advice about the best option based, taking into account a person’s overall health, lifestyle, and preferences.
