Six Major Causes of Male Infertility

Male infertility causes

Male infertility is more common than you think and nothing to be ashamed of because it is not a measure of how masculine you are or how strong a man is. Most often, the reasons are not even known to men! Thankfully, there are solutions to male infertility.

1. Oligospermia or low sperm count

Commonly referred to as having a low sperm count, oligospermia is the name used to represent a common male fertility issue. It is estimated that a male should have an average sperm count above 15 million sperm per millilitre. If it is less than this, it is considered as low sperm count.

2. Varicocele

Within the testicles, the veins may be enlarged over time. This can be due to poorly functioning valves in the veins or if they are compressed due to nearby structures. Once the abnormal growth takes place, it can disrupt the quantity, quality, and motility of sperm cells, which leads to infertility. This can be easily corrected surgically.

3. Reduced or low sexual desire

A man’s fertility is also linked with his hormone health. Changes in virility and libido, often governed by hormones, could indicate issues with fertility. If your sexual desire has reduced, it may help to talk to an andrologist.

4. Pain or swelling in testicles

Several different conditions could lead to pain or swelling in the testicles, many of which could contribute to infertility. The possible reasons are torsion in the testicles or inflammation or some challenge in the epididymis (Gonorrhea and chlamydia are common causes). Meet an andrologist immediately.

5. Problems maintaining erection or issues with ejaculation

A man’s ability to maintain an erection is often linked to his hormone levels. Reduced hormones could potentially translate into trouble conceiving and similarly, an inability to ejaculate is a sign that it might be time to visit a doctor. There are other ejaculatory disorders too – premature ejaculation or retrograde ejaculation – which may need clinical attention.

6. Small, firm testicles

The testes house a man’s sperm, so testicle health is paramount to male fertility. Small or firm testicles could indicate potential issues that should be explored by an andrologist.
